DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

Purpose & Selection Criteria

Purpose: The Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute through its Distinguished Alumnus Award honors and awards outstanding Oakland Unified School District Alumni who are well accomplished and highly regarded in their profession. These individuals have made outstanding contributions to their community, state or nation and continue to serve as role models for young people. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is part of the Institute’s Award and Recognition program which publicly honors those individuals who reflect remarkable achievements as products of Oakland public schools and have made significant contributions to promoting standards of academic excellence within the Oakland Unified School District.

Background: As the newly appointed Oakland Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Marcus A. Foster envisioned a public education system that would produce highly motivated and gifted students who were well prepared to face the rigors of post-secondary education and successfully compete in an emerging global society. Alumni use their talents to become influential leaders in the community and serve as role models for youth. It is in this spirit that the Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute annually awards alumnus who personify the ideals of Dr. Foster.

Awards: Award recipients are publicly honored by the Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute Board of Directors at an annual awards ceremony. Awardees receive a life-time achievement award in honor of their accomplishments.

Eligibility: Nominees must have graduated from an OUSD high school or matriculated in an
Oakland public school for at least six years.

Selection Criteria: Nominees will be selected by a review panel appointed by the Institute and
selected as the award recipient based upon the following criteria:

  • Professional Achievements: MAFEI seeks nominees who are well recognized by their peers and the public for their career accomplishments. Nominees are regarded as experts and influential decision-makers in their field.

  • Public Service: MAFEI is seeking nominees who have a distinguished record of service to their community and have committed their time and resources in support of Oakland public schools.

  • Role Model For Youth: MAFEI is seeking nominees who have demonstrated high ethical standards and a sincere commitment to support student success.


Deadline: The Institute must receive nomination application (to be completed on-line); nomination cover sheet and nominee's resume,(mailed or faxed) no later than June 29th, 2007.
