Small Businesses Innovate
|
|
|
|
| |
According to SBA's 2009 "The Small Business Economy, a Report to the President:"
"...Research continues to show that small businesses and entrepreneurs
will play important roles in the economy’s eventual recovery, through their flexibility and ability to create innovative solutions, new industries, and jobs." |
The world has changed -- almost overnight. They say fashion repeats itself and there is nothing new under the sun, but our problems haven't been seen by human eyes before, and as individuals and as a society we are all busy creating coping mechanisms -- and answers. But it's small business that will develop technologies to counter global warming. Small businesses, by virtue of existing, will turn the global financial crises around. Small businesses will find ways to interpret and refine how we interact with technology. Why? Because researchers, experts, inventors, innovators and rebels start small businesses.
| "...Looking forward, small businesses will be a large part of moving the economy ahead as entrepreneurs continue to spur new innovation and create employment." |
What can we do, at warp speed, to create an environment where small business can innovate in partnership with the community to bring about critical changes?
1. Define them: Realize who they are and what they do. They design, develop, manufacture, they move goods and they provide services. They are all around us. They are owned and run by our families. They are us.
2. Be critical: Hold them to high standards.
3. Be fair: Deal with them fairly.
4. Hold them accountable: What is your checklist for a socially responsible business? Locally? Nationally? Globally?
5. Support them: Small businesses need legislative support in order to be proactive and progressive. It's up to us as voters and citizens to support legislators who understand the urgency of the critical issues facing us, and who have the ability to effect change.
6. Patronize them...and spread the word.
