Too Many Hats?

Strategic Marketing at its core is about the various parts of business interacting with each other in a way that allows the business to react quickly to change in order to stay relevant.

How many hats do you wear? Too many is usually considered a negative but if you run the finance, marketing, and production departments -- there are no obstacles in the way of clear communication between them! You can quickly change your marketing mix, your product line or your pricing based on warning signals from any part of the business.

Data from each part of the business also easily informs your long term planning -- nothing is hidden or translated -- you have all the facts you need to make the best decisions.

What's missing? Other opinions, a challenge to your thought process might be something you wish you had! Changing how you think of your team can keep you grounded and your ideas sharp. Ask for feedback even when it's outside the job description of your team member, and think of friends and family as part of your team -- criticism is a valuable thing.

Wearing less hats? If you manage a larger enterprise clear channels of communication are essential to making sure you have the facts you need WHEN you need them -- in time to act to meet the challenge. This means not only great meetings and accurate reports, but as always, good people working together.

Why they leave

Customers often leave because of how they're treated, not the product or price. It's not always about the trade, but about the traders -- not about the deal, but the dealers. People may want your product or service, but they may need to do business a certain way. Finding out what that is may not be easy, but it's worth it.

Manners or Marketing?

How good does it feel to get a pat on the back instead of a complaint? Even though we wish it didn't matter to our personal well being, it really does feel good.

And so it is with our customers, too. Here are some ideas for giving your best customer that good feeling that might make their day, and create long term loyalty.

~Think of something you really appreciate about them - then tell them the next chance you get.
~Take a sincere interest in them and their lives. The more you know about them the more you may be able to help them -- even if it has nothing to do with business.
~Take a serious complaint or problem seriously and make yourself personally part of the solution.
~Invite one top customer out to lunch, dinner or drinks every month.
~Hold an annual customer appreciation event for all of your good customers - take them on a boat ride, golfing, to a play or make your own party.
~Find out what charity or special cause is dear to your top customer and donate 5% of the income you received from this customer for the year to that charity.

~Give them....chocolate! It's always good to be associated with sweets!

  What is content management?
Most web hosts offer content managed websites, or "CMS" (Content Management Systems). These are online applications that allow you to update the content of your website. Usually no knowledge of web programming is necessary. There are various levels of CMS, from simple to complex. There are open source systems, and proprietary; php based and java based...and the list goes on.

Content Manager features can vary greatly. Here are some things to consider:

~Is the CMS administration panel or "backend" easy to use? Is it easy to understand the organization of your website?
~Is the CMS customizable to fit your needs?

~Do you have a choice of templates or will a unique design be developed for you? If you have to choose from templates, will you have the design and layout flexibility you need?
~Are you confined to a standard navigational system? Can menus and other navigation be tailored to your needs, or will your choices be limited?
~Are search engine "friendly" word based strings displayed in the address bar, or is the url a string of numbers?
~What bells and whistles come with your CMS? Are they the ones you'll need? Will you need to pay extra for things that might be free with another CMS system?
