The Future -- Is it Bright?

The future of your business depends on the marketing you do today.

How you're doing now is a result of your past marketing efforts.

It's that simple, so keep it simple.

With less in the marketing budget and a steeper sales curve, is it really the time for haphazard marketing? Is it time for spray and pray mailings or spamming? Time to dive into the social networking pool? Time for last ditch efforts and frantic moves?

No! It's time to do what has always worked for you -- but more of it and better.

Is it also time to try new things? Yes! Use sound judgment, do your homework, plan big, test small, and track results. It's always good to keep an open mind about marketing.

Manners or Marketing?

Social Network Marketing

Social networking has been around for a while now. Only recently has it become a part of business networking and even marketing strategy. It's the big buzz.

But is it also the big buzz kill? That's debatable.

Too Much Time?

Forget the fact that keeping your postings current on social networking sites (blogs included) is extremeley time consuming and can be a distraction from more effective forms of marketing, is it even effective? Some forms of marketing are sometimes difficult to measure -- like a website, they just need to be there. Social networking may fall into this catetory. What's the solution? Decide how often you really need to post, and stick to it.

Too Much Information?

You might not let the cat out of the bag...but your "friends" might. A little digging can unearth a lot of info you might not normally share if you appreciate boundaries between your personal and business relationships. Many of us want to maintain a formality in business that isn't furthered when our customer is faced with posts from our parents and children and best buddies. What's the answer? Investigte the private and public settings on your account and set them according to your needs. You many even decide to create a separate online entity for your business - a separate account.

Too Much, But Not Enough!

Businesses are rushing to social networking sites as a way to increase their network of referral sources, event participants, and a way to communicate with many people all at once. That's great, but it doesn't change the rules of sales. People buy from people they like. And in most cases to like someone you have to know them. What's the answer? Social networking is another layer of marketing but it's not a substitute for nurturing your customer in person - it's just a little extra glue!

What is content management?

Most web hosts offer content managed websites, or "CMS" (Content Management Systems). These are online applications that allow you to update the content of your website. Usually no knowledge of web programming is necessary. There are various levels of CMS, from simple to complex. There are open source systems, and proprietary; php based and java based...and the list goes on.

Content Manager features can vary greatly. Here are some things to consider:

~Is the CMS administration panel or "backend" easy to use? Is it easy to understand the organization of your website?
~Is the CMS customizable to fit your needs?

~Do you have a choice of templates, or a unique design? If you have to choose from templates, will you have the design and layout flexibility you need?
~Are you confined to a standard navigation? Can menus and other navigational systems be tailored to your needs, or will your choices be limited?
~Does the CMS website show the database search string in the address bar, or a search engine "friendly" word based string?
~What bells and whistles come with your CMS? Are they the ones you'll need? Will you need to pay extra for things that might be free with another CMS system?
