Holiday Hope

Yes, it's ok to hope. Hope isn't a belief in fairy tales - it's a symptom of the human will to achieve a personal vision.

Hope isn't something you build a business plan on, but hope can bring you back to a positive outlook and infuse energy into your day - the positive energy you need to keep finding solutions to the extraordinary business challenges that the economy is presenting us with.

What is hope then, and how do we get to it?

What it is: Hope is defined as "the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best."

And how do we get to it? When we're able to look at our situation objectively and understand its problems and opportunities, and when we make the decision to accept the challenges and sometimes the risks involved in achieving our goals - then we can start fresh, get grounded, and come out punching - we have hope.

When not to hope: when we have assessed the situation and cannot "see" how to achieve our goals, the thing to do is not to hope, but to revisit the plan and make adjustments. Once a realistic plan is in place there is real hope.

More on Hope

From Wikipedia: When Pandora opened Pandora's Box, she let out all the evils except one: hope. Apparently, the Greeks considered hope to be as dangerous as all the world's evils. But without hope to accompany all their troubles, humanity was filled with despair... In some faiths and religions of the world, hope plays a very important role. Hope can be passive in the sense of a wish, or active as a plan or idea, often against popular belief, with persistent, personal action to execute the plan or prove the idea...From socio-cognitive viewpoint, hope is closely related to cognitive decision-making and can be considered its critical factor, such as risk dependent danger . In real situations, human agent's decision depends on the comparison of his/her danger perception and the hope indicator, which can be assessed as a value proportional to the probability of an event and its expected outcome/payoff/benefits

Everyone Markets

Are you "looking for work" from your customers? Try looking for ways to help them instead. The tougher the competition is for the dollars being spent in today's market, the more problems your customers have that you can help find a way to solve. More than ever before we have to focus on their success in order to ensure our own. We can't compete for jobs - we have to help our customer compete for his place in the market. Find quantifiable, real ways you can do this, and you'll have "a job."
