Familiarity breeds blindness
There are some positions, for instance, in property management fields, that are rotated to keep a fresh perspective. Of course our inside perspective is invaluable in a million different ways, but over time we all develop a second blind spot -- we don't see, or we become comfortable with the problems we see day in and day out -- usually the ones we don't have the resources to address. Most of us don't want to be rotated out of our jobs, but we can renew our perspective, and borrow others'.
We can't see ourselves -- just our reflection
We can only see what we want to see. It's not easy to want to see ourselves (our businesses) when it means seeing weakness or problems because we feel defensive about things we feel can't be changed or remedied. But if we stay non-judgmental and open to the comments and feedback of "outsiders" -- those with a perspective free of blame and excuses -- we can continually renew our priorities and keep the important issues at the top of the list.
Our views change based on what's possible vs what's right
We have to change our plans based on what we can realistically achieve, but we shouldn't change our judgment based on our resources. If there isn't a budget to fix a hole in the roof, we don't cross it off the list just because we've gotten used to the drip drip drip -- we work toward finding a solution. It's the same with our business -- if we see an issue that keeps our market from us -- we have to keep it high on our list of priorities and find a way to address it, even if it takes time. The alternative is to shrug it off and wonder why we're not getting our share of the market.
Trust your own eyes and instincts
Along with an openness to the perspective of others, keeping a non-judgmental but critical and vigilant eye on our business is important. Over time we can doubt ourselves when it comes to marketing -- connecting our business to the outside world -- because we have too many conflicting priorities to weigh and too many constituents to please. But business owners and managers are a very special breed of risk takers, thinkers, and fighters. Trust your own judgments and instincts and keep the important issues at the top of your priority list. It will pay off in happy customers and a respected brand.
